Our Story

Hi, everyone, and thanks for taking the time to read our story. My name is Estelle, and I am the owner and operator of Reenie & Miggin's Downtown Mercantile. I have lived in Folsom, LA, all my life, fifteen minutes from the historic downtown area. I worked as a pediatric emergency department nurse for almost 20yrs commuting to New Orleans my entire career. In 2022, I decided it was time for a change; I started looking into other opportunities outside of healthcare and the possibility of owning a business. In March of 2023, I quit my job 3 months short of my 20-year anniversary.

I knew if I went into business, I wanted to be in the historic district of downtown Covington. My original plans would not allow me to be in the area I wanted, so I started over with a completely different idea. I planned and researched for months, really trying to focus on something I could be passionate about for the next season of my life. I have always enjoyed supporting small businesses in the area and across the states. While traveling, I would always research the area so that I could shop and dine in small family businesses. They are always appreciative of the support, and I loved learning their stories. Considering my love for small-town shopping and small businesses, the idea of Reenie and Miggin's was created.

What's with the name?

I get this question often. I am Reenie; my sister taught my niece and nephews to call me this since they were babies. I have never been called Aunt Estelle just Reenie, derived from my middle name Irene.  Named after my two great-grandmothers. I have grown to love it and have only met a handful of people named Estelle or Irene in my lifetime.

Miggin's was the nickname of my grandmother's sister, who passed away when they were children. My grandmother would tell me stories of Miggin's, and I always loved the name. In a way, the business name is in remembrance of my great-grandmothers and grandmother, who were influential women in my life.

The shop

Most of our inventory is from small business shops I personally shopped at prior to ever planning a business of my own. I am continually searching for local artwork to feature in the shop, with plans already in the works for new products. I love to support veteran-owned, women-owned, family-owned small businesses. I enjoy learning the stories of other small businesses, especially ones whose purpose is to give back and build opportunities in their own communities.

My hope is our customers find something they love or gifts for all the special people in their lives. Being a mother of three boys, I intentionally created a space just for men to enjoy the shop as well. So come to downtown Covington, enjoy all the shops on Lee Lane, and stop by Reenie & Miggin's for a visit; we look forward to meeting you!
